Backpacking is an excellent hobby, and after you make your initial equipment purchases, it is fairly inexpensive. If you have a tight budget & can't afford new equipment (or your just cheap like me), there is quite a few backpacks, tents, stoves, sleeping bags & other other items available at eBay.
